BEARERS OF HIS CROSS
By Dr. P.P. Job
“Jesus has many lovers of His heavenly kingdom, but very few bearers of His Cross.” Thomas A Kempis
On 19th January 2010, I completed 65 years. I am working for the Lord from New Delhi for the last 40 years. I worked 33 years with Rev. Richard and Sister Sabina Wurmbrand. They both are with the Lord. I am continuing their vision and mission in Asia.
It was my privilege to work among persecuted Christians in Communist countries all over the world. I even saw a Pastor crucified on a cross in Sudan, Africa. I cried several times by seeing others suffering. My publication is named ‘Tortured For Christ’. I am able to publish it regularly since the last 38 years. The first name of the magazine was ‘The Voice of Martyrs’ which was banned in India. Finally, I lost my two sons and I myself became Tortured for Christ.
When Rev. Dr. M.J. Joseph, former Principal of Mar Thoma Theological College wrote a review about my latest book ‘Turn Your Sorrow’. He quoted Thomas A Kempis; “Jesus has many lovers of His Heavenly Kingdom, but very few bearers of His Cross”. We are going to meditate more and more about the Cross of Jesus in the coming Passion Week, without experiencing suffering and praying to escape from suffering and pain.
“I am privileged to be a bearer of His Cross.” St. Paul says to Philippian Christians “For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for Him” (Philippians 1:29). St. Peter also encourages Christians. “However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name” (1 Peter 4:16). I had prepared my two sons to face suffering. Eldest son John was named “John The Patmos”. Richard Wurmbrand used to call him Patmos. My second son was named Michael, Wurmbrand’s son’s name. Michael Wurmbrand suffered with his father and mother, in Romania.
“I am qualified to be a bearer of His Cross.” Campbell Morgan an author and speaker of the Gospel wrote in one of his books: “Only Crucified man can preach Crucified Christ.” Dead man will not react. I have travelled 129 nations as an Ambassador for Christ. I cried loudly sometimes when my Christian brothers in Communist Countries were brutally beaten and killed. But when my two sons were killed, I had no tears to cry.
I am running several institutions. More than 150 persons are working with me. Some of them try to cheat, blackmail, try to kill me and assault my character. But these days I do not have any reaction. Earlier, before my children’s death, I used to react. One Pastor wrote a very bad and nasty letter against me last year and he circulated it among my friends. Several of my Directors told me to go to court. But let me tell you after the death of my two son’s, I am entirely a different person. When you undergo extreme suffering, you will understand what I am saying. Earlier I had several desires, now I always say “Let His Will be done in my life”.
John, my eldest son, became a bearer of His Cross. John was a computer wizard from his college days. Having specialized in computer studies at NIIT. He decided to set up his own business in computers. However, he also wanted to win hearts for Jesus because he was greatly inspired by Dr. Richard Wurmbrand and my testimonies. When John was 12 years old, the renowned evangelist Sam Kamalesan came to stay in our house for a few days. One day he asked John what he was planning to do once he grew up. Without a moment’s hesitation, John replied, “I will be a missionary and follow in my father’s footsteps.” Once he grew up, John found himself in a dilemma on how to follow both his passions, but the Lord led him and showed him a path where he could do both.
In 1993, on one of his visits to India, Richard Wurmbrand was relaxing in my home. We were discussing the state of the Communist world, where we had fought long and hard for the freedom of persecuted Christians from the shackles of the Communist leaders of Eastern Europe. We then discussed how the Muslim World had become a great center of religious persecution. Richard Wurmbrand shared with me the incidents of persecution of our Christian brothers in the Arabic World. I agreed with him that we needed to start our work in these countries but also cautioned him that the risk was higher than working in the Iron Curtain Nations. I told him that Communist leaders only imprison and torture believers but Muslim leaders immediately execute Christian workers. John, who was eating nearby, was listening to our conversation intently. While Richard Wurmbrand was pondering on how to get workers to begin work in the Muslim World, John interrupted us by saying, “Uncle Wurmbrand, don’t worry; if you don’t have any workers, I will go.”
Barely three years later, in 1996, Rev. Jan Bor, Director of the Netherlands Mission, who had come to Coimbatore to attend our Gospel Campaign, took John to Kuwait. I also followed them. John began his work secretly. We met with underground church leaders to discuss how to operate in supplying necessary literature and assistance to underground churches. John’s computer skills came in handy as we set up a computer firm, Green Field Electronics (GFE). This was a good cover, as GFE actually stood for Gospel For Emirates. Through this company, John was able to print and distribute Bibles, songbooks, and biographies of Wurmbrand and myself in Arabic to Muslims. John printed and distributed Christian Bibles in Jeddah, Dammam and Riyadh while basing himself in Dubai. The literature ministry was very effective, and many became underground Christians while continuing with their Muslim name and religion. Many Iranian, Egyptian, Jordanian and Pakistani Christians helped him in his underground work, and he was very successful in bringing many into the Christian fold. With time, as technology advanced and computer technology allowed the publishing and uploading of books on the Internet (e-books), John shared with me the necessity of a new approach to the literature ministry. He could break every bastion of the Iron Curtain nations and penetrate every home. We planned to type all our books in to the computer and upload them on the Internet so that they would be accessible to everyone. With this end in mind, he was planning to wind-up his operations in Dubai and come back to Delhi in March 2007. But two months earlier, God called him. I am able to share with you this story because John is no more and not is the company (GFE)
In my old age, I have started the Michael Job Orphanage for girls of martyred and persecuted Christians. It is also a big fight against discrimination of girl child in India. This institution is in Coimbatore, South India; two nights train journey from Delhi. Whenever I get a chance to be with my 501 adopted daughters and 1000 day-scholars, I spend quality time with them. Some of the small children do not know why their parents were killed recently in Orissa State. They were bearers of the Cross of Jesus. I am privileged to serve them with your financial help. 107 dedicated workers work, in the orphanage almost sixteen hours without rest and with less salary. They are the bearers of the Cross for these children. You also can find out certain ways or places to become bearers of the Cross.
